Psychiatric Hospital
The 16 bed Psychiatric Hospital of North Central Health Care provides mental health assessment, stabilization, and alcohol or opiate detoxification services for person 13 years of age (Adolescents who require longer term stabilization are transferred to Mendota or Winnebago, Wisconsin State facilities that provide the educational component required by Wisconsin law) or older who are in crisis situations or who have disorders which are not best managed on an outpatient basis. The Treatment Team consists of Psychiatrists, a Psychologist, Nurse Practitioners or a Physician’s Assistant, Social Workers, the Clinical Dietician, Occupational Therapy staff, Registered and Licensed Practical Nurses and Certified Nursing Assistants (Psych Techs) with additional psychiatric training. A Psychiatrist or Physician is either present or on call for the hospital 24 hours per day and will be contacted to authorize admission to the hospital. Persons will be accepted regardless of race, creed, color or national origin, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, or physical disability.
A prospective patient must meet one of the following criteria to be an inpatient admission:
- Acute dangerousness, abuse or aggression secondary to mental disturbance, as identified by the following criteria:
A. Suicidal, homicidal or abusive activity.
B. Physical incapacitation or a deterioration (i.e. unable to care for self, inability to eat, sleep disturbance).
C. Poor judgment creating immediate potential for harm to self or others demanding social protection.
D. Poor impulse control with hostility or destructiveness.
- Impaired performance of daily living activities secondary to mental disturbance including family, vocational, social or education functioning.
A. Failure of attempt at outpatient treatment by reason of insufficient benefit, intensity or compliance.
B. Patient requires continuous skilled observation that can only be provided in a Hospital setting.
C. Patient experiences severe medication side effects (i.e. blood pressure fluctuations, irregular heart beats, or toxic effects or levels of medication).
D. Experience of psychiatric symptoms, which are intolerable to the patient or to society. Example: Having frightening auditory hallucinations.
- The person signs a voluntary admission and must meet criteria for admission (In case of guardianship, the guardian must also sign.)
- There is a Court Order of Detention or 3 party petition.
- The person is incapacitated by alcohol.
- 51.15 Emergency Detention initiated by qualified police officer or Clinical Director or his/her designee.
- A scheduled Brief Therapeutic Intervention as arranged by the outpatient clinician with the attending psychiatrist’s approval.
Once stabilized, the client must be discharged to a less restrictive setting.
