What is involved in EMDR?

EMDR therapy involves several key components designed to help individuals process traumatic memories and experiences. The therapy typically begins with the therapist and client establishing a therapeutic relationship and discussing the client's history and specific trauma or distressing memories they wish to address. Then, the therapist helps the client identify negative beliefs or emotions associated with the trauma.

During the processing phase, the client focuses on the distressing memory while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation, which can involve following the therapist's hand movements, auditory tones, or tactile sensations. This bilateral stimulation is thought to facilitate the brain's natural processing of the memory, allowing the client to reprocess it in a more adaptive and less distressing way. As the session progresses, the client may experience shifts in their thoughts, feelings, and perceptions related to the traumatic memory.

Throughout the process, the therapist provides support and guidance, helping the client navigate any emotional or cognitive reactions that arise. The goal of EMDR therapy is to help the client fully process the traumatic memory, reduce distressing symptoms, and promote healing and resolution. Typically, multiple sessions are needed to address various aspects of the trauma and achieve lasting results.
