When to Seek Help: Supporting Teen Mental Health
When to Seek Help: Supporting Teen Mental Health
Today’s teens are navigating a complex world. Academic expectations, social pressures, online influence, family stressors, and world events can all impact emotional wellbeing. While mood changes and growing independence are a normal part of adolescence, sometimes what looks like “typical teen behavior” may signal something more.
In recognition of World Teen Mental Wellness Day, we want to offer guidance for parents and caregivers who may be wondering when it is time to seek additional support.
Understanding What Teens May Be Experiencing
Adolescence is a time of rapid emotional, social, and neurological development. It is normal for teens to experience ups and downs. However, persistent or intense changes in behavior, mood, or functioning can indicate that a young person may be struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use, or other mental health concerns.
Common signs to watch for include:
Withdrawal from friends, family, or activities they once enjoyed
Significant changes in sleep or appetite
Increased irritability, anger, or mood swings
Drop in academic performance
Loss of motivation
Expressions of hopelessness or worthlessness
Risk-taking or substance use
Talking about self-harm or suicide
If these behaviors last more than a couple of weeks, intensify, or interfere with daily life, it may be time to seek professional support.
Reducing Stigma Around Mental Health
Mental health is just as important as physical health. Seeking help for emotional or behavioral concerns is not a sign of weakness. In fact, early intervention often leads to better long-term outcomes.
Open conversations at home can make a significant difference. Listening without judgment, validating feelings, and reassuring teens that support is available can help them feel less alone.
When additional care is needed, partnering with a behavioral health provider can provide tools, coping strategies, and a path forward.
