What is a Developmental Disability?

A developmental disability is a physical or mental impairment that manifests during childhood or adolescence and impedes a person’s mental, physical, social, or emotional growth. These conditions are often hereditary, but they can also be caused by serious injuries. Autism, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis are all examples of developmental disabilities. Some of these conditions have very noticeable symptoms while others can be more subtle.

The following may be signs that your child has a developmental disorders:

  • Below average scores on IQ tests
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Difficulty remembering things
  • Taking longer than usual to start sitting, crawling, and walking
  • Difficulty making friends or socializing
  • Falling behind other children in school

More serious signs of developmental disabilities include seizures, slurred speech, and hearing problems. It is important to have these disorders diagnosed as early in the child’s life as possible so that they can be put on an education and development program built to meet their unique needs.
